Empowering vulnerable populations and refugee-led businesses

Location:Jacaranda Hall (Mezzanine)Track:Track 3

Of the 600+ million people without access to energy, around 40 million are living in forcibly displaced settings. Delivering clean energy in regions hosting forcibly displaced have long faced challenges in accessing sustainable and affordable energy, due to remoteness, lack of general infrastructure, perceived uncertainties of the customer base, and difficulties accessing funding/finance, amongst other challenges. This session will explore how to stimulate private sector engagement to establish long-term, market-driven energy access in forced displacement settings, and how to invest into local energy enterprises delivering energy products/services at the last mile.

Key discussions will focus on:

  • Empowering private sector leadership to develop scalable and sustainable energy businesses within refugee settings.

  • Identifying last-mile distributors to connect energy providers with end-users in these communities.

  • Enabling refugee-led businesses to actively participate in and benefit from the energy economy.

  • Attracting investment to create a viable and self-sustaining market, ensuring affordability and long-term impact.

This session will highlight strategies to lower energy costs in refugee camps while enhancing economic opportunities for displaced populations by fostering an environment where the private sector can innovate, invest, and expand.
